A weekend walk on Lăpușneanu Street

February 22, 2022
Lăpușneanu Street is a short street with a long history and a big personality.

A no cars allowed area, the street today is a hot spot of cafes, terraces, restaurants and bars, all taking advantage of the charming location. You can enjoy large beer gardens including one with a selection of over 300 beers, great food and several smaller artsy locations.

The historic Trianon Cinema and the Union Museum are also on the street, but really every building on Lăpușneanu has its own notable history, as this street has always been a dynamic heart of the city, at the forefront of cultural, journalistic, artistic and business developments throughout the centuries.

This vintage vibe is found today not only in the style of some coffee shops that are stuffed with memorabilia, but also in the Northern part of the street being the epicenter of old books and antiquities sellers. If you’ve been to Paris and enjoyed the Bouquinistes on the banks of the Seine, you’ll enjoy these.

Barely 400 meters long, the charming and dense Lăpușneanu street opens up into Eminescu Plaza in the North and Union Șquare in the South.

A must see destination even if in Iași only for the weekend. Take a look at the list below to see what it has to offer.

Churches
The “Assumption of the Virgin” church was founded by boyar Savin Zmucilă vel Ban and was sanctified on the 15th of June 1705 by Misail, Metropolitan of Suceava and Moldavia. The dwelling’s name is linked to the title worn by the founder of high official of the prince (“ban”). Before this, there was another church in this place, shepherded by priest “Ioan ot Banul”, according to a document from the time of Prince Vasile Lupu (issued in 1638), while the latest evidence attest a churchly settlement here, ever since 1560.
